……………………………………………………………………………

Namaste friends. Our twelfth project follows the philosophy of the previous one a little. Still in the purification rhythm, we came to the southernmost part of India in search of Ayurveda, traditional Indian medicine.

With more than 5,000 years Ayurveda is an extremely complex technique and our idea is just to get a sense of how it works. Based on a broad understanding of the body, mind and spirit Ayurveda is far from being just a relaxing massage as it is sometimes known.

Ayurvedic treatment differs from conventional treatments by its unique approach to healing. The Ayurveda principle of treating the patient and not the disease is the mainstay of all forms of Ayurvedic treatments, instead of trying to cure an isolated disease, Ayurveda takes into account the individual as a whole.

Ayurveda takes a look at a person’s body, mind and soul for diagnosis and treatment. Thus, a balance between all three elements is the key to healthy living.

In our intensive 3 things were very clear, the treatments are important, but food is equally important and the balance between the human being and the place where he is found is essential, both for the medicines that will be used and for the ingredients of the meal .

Our job was to help out at an Ayurveda clinic that works alongside a resort for treatment patients in the state of Kerala in the city of Varkala. The site was a pioneer in Ayurvedic treatments in the city and has been operating since 1996. Doctors there still support a city Ayurvedic hospital. The site has 2 doctors, one of them, founder of the clinic with many years of experience and still has 3 more therapists.

Our tasks were divided, Dudu ended up being more in the food part, as commented very important in the treatments and Carol more involved with therapies and medicines. Of course, we could not perform the therapies, but monitoring and providing support during them was possible and this made it possible to understand a little of how everything works. In the kitchen, she was very productive, even with Ayurvedic cooking classes, taught by the doctor herself.

In addition to all this, we managed to have a great exchange of culture with the local people, because as it is a smaller city, we were able to meet many people and stipulate a routine, even be recognized and integrated in the festivities of a temple near where we lived and that we went almost every day.

In the end the place was in great need of help in several areas and we ended up getting involved in other projects, but we felt more aware of this ancient technique and of recharged batteries to start the more social jobs that are already traditional on our trips.
