Primeiro Projeto – Ajuda Social

Projeto1-1

Molweni amigos!

First Project – Social Aid

Hi Friends! Our first volunteer work was in South Africa, in the Amapondo Children’s Project, which started in 2001 and was registered as a non-profit organization in 2006. The project aims to help several institutions and communities in Port St Johns, a place in the center of the old Transkei , which is ranked as one of the 10 poorest in the world.

During the apartheid years, Transkei became independent of South Africa, but unable to maintain itself after bankruptcies of corrupt industries and governments, in 1994 the region was re-incorporated by South Africa, leaving only 20 years independent.

Our involvement is at the Mthumbane Pre-Primary School, a kindergarten-style school, built by the community in 1989 and inaugurated in 1990. Without government assistance to this day, this school survives with the support of volunteers . It receives about 70 children from 0 to 6 years old, divided into 2 groups, from 0 to 2 years and from 2 to 6 years. In addition to the 2 classrooms, there is also a small kitchen (without water inside), a small hall that is used as a teachers’ room and a bathroom, installed in 2015, with private and unloading (and until then children had never seen or used a toilet with discharge).

We help from Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 13:30 p.m. Our assignments vary by day, from general school maintenance, caring for and playing with children in the “playground”, preparing snacks and lunches, classroom help, or any other need that may arise.

The main difficulty is the language, practically all the children only speak the local Xhosa language and are beginning to learn something of English. Thus, in order to communicate and understand children we have to learn some words and expressions of this local language. The 3 teachers, as well as the principal, speak English, but the cook only knows a few words and phrases, which makes life in the kitchen a lot of fun. Learning the local language was very hilarious, because everyone laughs when we try to say something.
