Merhaba amigos.

Tenth Project – Humanitarian Aid

Merhaba friends. It is with great joy that we reached our 10th project, the second on the European continent, our destination, Turkey. After an exploration of Constantinople, I say Istanbul, we went to Çeşme, near Izmir, to help the organization Imece Inisiyatifi Imece Inisiyatife. The Organization has been in existence for four years and is currently focused on refugees arriving in Turkey. Three are the projects, one of immediate aid, supporting those who try to cross the Aegean Sea and reach Greece (Europe), but without success they are rescued by the local police; Another medium-term, helping in refugee unofficial settlement with food, education among other necessities; It is a long-term one, aimed at providing vocational education for refugee women. Regarding the education program, the so-called “Imace Solar” is a program that aims to teach women about solar energy, how to build solar artifacts and install systems in homes. The goal behind teaching solar energy is to ensure that when these women return to their homes (in war-torn areas) they can independently provide electricity for their family. The program has already formed more than 8 classes. Among solar energy classes they also learn how to make handicrafts, soap and other things that are useful and easy to sell in local markets. We are working on three fronts, ready for any call by the police, giving workshops of our knowledge that can be useful and of course visiting the refugee unofficial settlement at least twice a week. We have visited 6 unofficial settlement, each one has its characteristic, facilities and difficulties. The most organized unofficial settlement has masonry houses, children go to school every day, there is a minimum of organization and life does not seem to be very different than that experienced by our small farmers in the interior of the state of RS in Brazil. On the other hand, the unofficial settlement is in a worse situation, the children do not go to school, the houses are actually improvised tents in a ground floor that when it rains everything changes into a large field of mud, the “houses”, have nothing plus an area for a wood burning heater, donated by the project and carpets that are actually the beds. The this are the reality in 5 of the 6 unofficial settlement we visited. The refugees who live in these unofficial settlement are there, because that is where the work is, close to farms where they serve as labor during times of harvest and planting. In the 5 fields with the greatest problems, the fields change according to the work, where there is work they go back, notifying the organization of the new location and so we can help. The field where there are houses, in fact already has become a village and all are situated in the rural areas of Izmir (Izmir). In the fields our help ranges from food distribution, baby milk, rain boots now in the winter, warmers, carpets plus carry a minimum of education and fun for children, especially in the worst-case unofficial settlement. The reality is much more complex than it seems, every day we received new information about the whole system. We tried to summarize especially what we did there, but the real scenario is complicated to explain in a short text. Follow our social medias for more information on the project as well and the planning for the next step to come.

Hugs.
